Bio | I’m Cam – a drummer and percussionist from Melbourne with a strong focus on drumline and marching percussion. I sort of fell into the world of Drumline as there were not many people doing it in Australia which presented some fairly unique opportunities for me…
It all started in 2008 when I was incredibly lucky to travel to China to perform as part of a 2000 piece marching band for the Beijing Olympics. All hyperbole aside, this was a life changing experience that provided me the opportunity to play along some truly incredible drummers from all over the world and ignited my passion for Drumline.
Following a short stint as lead snare for the Australian Youth Band, I established the D2Drumline in 2010. This group has proven to be hugely successful over the past decade and performing at a huge range of events including: the AFL Grand Final, Cricket World Cup Final, Melbourne Cup, Australian Open Men’s Finals, NBL Finals Series for Melbourne United and so many more.
In 2015 I ticked off a childhood dream when I was selected as one of 3 international performers to join the Blue Devils International Drumline (USA) for a European Tour, and in 2019 I ticked of the other childhood dream of performing with the Top Secret Drum Corps (Switzerland).
I have also worked with extensively Ralph Nader (BYOS) including a 2018 tour of Australia and New Zealand, and have travelled across the UK, USA, China, and all-around Australia.
As an educator, I have taught the full spectrum, from advanced professionals and university level students as a specialist technique teacher, right through to Hamish Blake – Yep. That was a laugh.
Through my role as Head Instructor of the National Drumline Camp I have been incredibly lucky to work alongside Bill Bachman, Harvey Thompson, Scott Johnson, Ralph Nader and some incredible local talent. I have presented a number of masterclasses at the VCA, multiple Percussive Arts Society Days of Percussion, 2014 Percussion Teachers Conference, was an Artist in Residence at the YMS Summer School in Canberra, and regularly conduct school workshops all over Melbourne and Australia. When I’m not stuck in the world of drumlines I perform with and incredibly fun “brass-house” trio named Not My Circus as well as a whole lot of other freelance work such as gigs with a flame-thrower trumpet playing DJ, Falls and Laneway Festivals with What So Not and heaps of other cool stuff.
It’s been one heck of a ride and I’m incredibly lucky to do what I do. I feel equally lucky to be able to share my knowledge and passion with other drummers and love putting together events like this for the community. |
